Fiona Hill is an expert on Russia who served in the Trump administration as an adviser; as of 2022, she is the current Robert Bosch Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Center on the United States and Europe in the Foreign Policy program. Hill comes from Bishop Aukland in northeast England, an impoverished postindustrial town whose residents find social mobility almost impossible to achieve. Through talent and luck, Hill managed to obtain an education that allowed her tremendous opportunities, including a doctorate in Russian Studies from Harvard University. Hill lived in Moscow during the late 1980s. Watching the collapse of the Soviet Union and the aftermath play out during her graduate studies in the US fueled a lifelong fascination with the slippage between democracy and autocracy. During her tenure in the Trump administration, Hill testified in President Trump’s first impeachment hearing regarding his allegedly influence-peddling phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Donald Trump was President of the United States from 2016-2020. Fiona Hill worked for his administration as an advisor on Russia. Trump was born to a wealthy family in Queens, New York, and received loans from his father to build real estate using the Trump real estate brand. Trump also featured in film and television before becoming the populist candidate who took the Republican Party by storm in 2016. Trump was impeached again for his rhetoric urging supporters to insurrection at the United States Capitol after he lost his bid for reelection.
Vladimir Putin is the President of the Russian Federation, and has served multiple terms in this and other top offices in Russia. Putin is known for his strong-man persona and ruthless tactics. Putin, who comes from a working class family in St. Petersburg, joined the KGB as a young man and rose through its ranks. Predecessor Boris Yeltsin personally selected Putin to succeed him in office in exchange for Putin not investigating Yeltsin for corruption, bribery, and other financial misdeeds. Putin took advantage of the fractures caused by the dissolution of the Soviet Union to consolidate power; later, he parlayed his experience into destabilizing elections in democracies like the US and the UK.
