Chapter 42-Epilogue 2 Analysis

The events of the novel’s final chapters lead Asher and Scarlett to learn about Romantic Love as a Catalyst for Self-Discovery through their mutual love and support. Examples of this personal growth work include Asher’s confrontation with Vincent at the hospital, Scarlett’s break-up with Asher after the race and crash, Asher’s conversations with Armstrong, Ron, and Vincent after he’s benched, and Asher and Scarlett’s reunion outside RAB. These scenes illustrate the work both protagonists have done to stop ignoring their troubles and learn to reach out to their loved ones for help. Asher learns how to rely on his coach, captain, teammates, and father. His honesty with these figures helps to repair The Tension Between Personal Desires and Communal Expectations. For example, when Vincent understands the sincerity of Asher’s love for Scarlett, he becomes a supporter of their relationship rather than an obstacle. Strengthening these relationships in turn gives Asher the courage and heart to repair his relationship with Scarlett. The time that Scarlett spends apart from Asher also helps her to reflect on her mistakes and compels her to rely on Brooklyn and Carina for support. Maintaining these friendships helps her to make amends with Asher. In these ways, the novel illustrates how healthy romantic relationships are fostered by healthy, holistic personal lives.

Once Asher and Scarlett reconcile with their past heartbreak, disappointment, and loss, they create space to build a sustainable future together. Indeed, allowing themselves “to abandon [their] worries and sink into the pleasure of the moment” frees them to be better versions of themselves (576). The parallel images of Scarlett and Asher in the hospital symbolize their loneliness and weakness apart. Once they show up at one another’s bedsides, Scarlett and Asher feel safe and protected. Therefore, when the couple gets back together in Chapter 53, they’re agreeing to put the past behind them and to focus on their current lives and relationship instead: “The past [is] the past,” Scarlett thinks, “and the future is unpredictable” (576). However, the present belongs to Scarlett and Asher if they let themselves live in the moment and embrace open communication. They both have to humble themselves to achieve this new unified front. Scarlett demonstrates humility when she admits that her endangering herself for the showcase is no different from Asher endangering himself by racing. Asher shows humility when he admits that risking his life by racing has been a way for him to escape his guilt over Teddy. These admissions capture the characters’ desire to overcome their pasts in the name of building a new life together.

Following the conventions of the contemporary romance genre, the author gives Asher and Scarlett a happy ending. The final two epilogue sections illustrate how Asher and Scarlett have changed as individuals and a couple since reconciling their differences. The closing scene, in which they host a party at their new shared abode, symbolizes cohesion and comfort, renewal and redemption. Asher and Scarlett both know they will encounter more familial, professional, and personal pressures in the future, but now that they’ve created a life together, they feel ready for whatever surprises and challenges life might hold for them.
