Literary Context

While much of Poe’s works defy categorization, he made a large contribution to the Gothic fiction movement in America in the nineteenth century. Gothic fiction is typically defined by its engagement with horror, death and romance, exploring the unknown and the depths of the human psyche. Gothic literature is also defined by an emotional component that confronts the obscure, the sublime, and terror, often brought about by encounters with the unknown.

The Gothic literary movement began in the mid-eighteenth century with the work of English writer Horace Walpole, who infused his book The Castle of Otranto (1764) with a sense of medievalism, mystery, and the macabre. The movement spread through much of Western Europe and to Russia. Matthew Lewis’s The Monk (1796), Ann Radcliffe’s The Italian (1797), and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) further shaped and redefined the genre. By the mid-nineteenth century, gothic fiction had waned in popularity but was ready for a revival as audiences returned to the “penny dreadful” serial fictions. Just as Poe began to gain popularity in America, contemporary writer Emily Brontë published Wuthering Heights (1847) in England, while Charles Dickens’s many works also reflected a gothic influence.

Poe added his own unique interpretation of the genre with “The Raven,” as well as with fiction like The Fall of the House of Usher (1839) and The Pit and the Pendulum (1842), among many others. Poe’s gothic fiction is characterized by turning inward—he engages with the landscape of the psyche, instead of the traditional setting of gothic fiction, pushing the limits of perception and sanity. His terror is an internal terror, and his themes deal directly with death, decomposition, mourning, and absence. Poe can be credited with bringing the genre to America and popularizing it for generations to come.

Historical Context

Much of Poe’s drive to write, to be recognized as a poet, and to engage with the gothic was primarily for his own survival. Orphaned at a young age, his relationship with is foster family was strained, and the publishing world of his time presented its own challenges to his success. He did not come from a privileged position, and thus had to make his own way as a writer, struggling with alcoholism and gambling as he went. His near constant state of poverty, which often led to periods of starvation, drove much of his writing, including who he wrote for and what he wrote.

Poe’s struggles were in many ways linked to the political and economic climate that existed in the 1830s—the Panic of 1837 (a financial crisis) sparked a period of major economic depression in the United States that lasted around seven years. The American publishing industry was both coalescing during this time—reaching more readers than ever through magazines—and struggling due to the depression. Given his desperate need for income, Poe rejected novels as too much of a financial risk, so instead he focused on writing and selling short stories for magazines. Though gothic stories were somewhat outmoded at the time, he focused on tales of horror and mystery because he knew they would sell, and he also wrote the world’s first detective stories about a French detective. “The Raven” was published as the United States began to come out of the depression, and Poe became an overnight celebrity with its success. Sadly, he was incapable of capitalizing on this success. After his wife’s death he descended into alcoholism and depression, squandering the boost to his reputation. While Poe might have been considered a bit of an outsider among his contemporaries, he achieved great the commercial success, his work reaching a broad sweep of the American public.
