Hope’s End symbolizes the precarious position of the Hope family, riddled with secrets and based on a foundation of lies. As its name suggests, Hope’s End is doomed to collapse into the ocean. The image of the dangerous, outsized, frightening house, full of the weighty secrets of an oppressive past, is a common trope in Gothic literature genre that Sanger borrows from.
Winston Hope commissioned the manor house in 1913 as a monument to himself; like Winston, it is outwardly expensive but internally rotten and lacking stability—a façade to mask his financial ruin. While it appears grand and ostentatious in scale and ornamentation, the erosion of the ground beneath it and the crumbling of the structure itself are a testament to Winston’s recklessness, hubris, and greed.
The deterioration of Hope’s End, which has progressed to perilous conditions by the time Kit arrives, is obvious to everyone but Mrs. Baker (Lenora Hope), who deludes herself into thinking that the house, like the narrative she has created for herself and her sister, is sound enough to remain intact despite the ravages of time and neglect. Rather than using her inheritance on the mansion’s upkeep, Lenora has been forced to pay off the blackmailer Berniece Mayhew. This misapplication of funds symbolizes the Hope family’s dependence on lies and Lenora’s misguided attempts to seize power and control.
Fittingly, the house begins to crumble more rapidly, and the ground literally starts to give way beneath it as Kit grows progressively closer to the truth of what happened on the night of the Hope family murders. The looming collapse indicates that the house—and the self-serving mythos of the Hopes—can only stand while its secrets are kept. When the crime is solved, the house and the perpetrators of the novel’s murders are wiped from the face of the earth.
Kit McDeere instantly recalls this ghoulish playground rhyme when the name of Lenora Hope is mentioned in Mr. Gurlain’s office. Like the nursery rhyme that immortalized the real-life acquitted murder suspect Lizzie Borden, the macabre doggerel everyone in Kit’s town knows recounts a night of violence and gore. The creation of the reductionist and playful rhyme, and its adoption as a cultural remnant, symbolizes the assumptions frequently made by outsiders. Its persistence points to the fascination with true crime, and the appeal of judging or making light of gruesome tragedy. The rhyme ignores the emotional reality of what happened to the Hope family, which traumatized and irrevocably changed the lives of those even tangentially involved. It echoes the prurient interest of the press and even the biased speculations of bad detectives like Vick.
At the end of the novel, Virginia Hope reveals that she is well aware of the public perception of “Lenora” when she restructures and takes ownership of the rhyme in the opening of her confessional letter to Kit. She writes, “At sixty-nine, Virginia Hope / Wrote her nurse this little note” (376). Reclaiming the verse is part of Virginia’s regaining her autonomy and agency by publishing her story to set the record straight, which she achieves with her memoir Still Life.
The portraits of Winston, Evangeline, and Lenora Hope are intentionally obscured when Kit McDeere first arrives at Hope’s End, while the one of Virginia is purposely mislabeled as “Lenora.”
At the time of their painting, the portraits symbolized the wealth and status that Winston Hope had tried to marry into; he wanted the décor of the mansion to match his class aspirations.
However, the portraits as Kit encounters them have become part of the all-consuming lie propping up life at Hope’s End. Hiding the faces of her family symbolizes the lengths to which Lenora Hope is willing to go to cover up her identity, her role in the murders, and her control of Virginia’s money.
Eventually, however, the paintings are one of the clues that lead Kit to solve the novel’s mystery. Berniece Mayhew refers to the older Hope daughter, who she believes was having an affair with her husband, as having blue eyes. Realizing that her patient has green eyes, Kit tears away the delicate black cloth that makes a mockery of true mourning and recognizes that the woman she has known as Mrs. Baker is actually the blue-eyed Lenora Hope.
