Chapter 4 Summary

Frustrated with his inability to work effectively indirectly, Fritz Bauer heads to Israel to meet with members of the Mossad. Arriving in Israel in December of 1959, Bauer has one new, critical piece of information: Eichmann's possible alias in Buenos Aires, which is "Ricardo Klement."This could be the break he is looking for, but he has to first convince the Mossad. Meeting with Isser Harel and Avi Aharoni, one of the Mossad's top agents, Bauer is frustrated at their visible reticence and coolness. However, both Aharoni and Isser are actually astounded and excited by this new information. The decision is soon made that Aharoni will travel to Buenos Aires, in order to verify that "Ricardo Klement" is in fact Eichmann.

On December 6th, Isser Harel is called into the office of David Ben-Gurion, the Prime Minister of Israel. Along with Haim Cohen, the attorney general, Harel reports to the Prime Minister the information he has received from Fritz Bauer. Along with this information, Harel relays a problem: Fritz Bauer, frustrated with the hesitation of the Mossad, has threatened to begin a process of extradition against Eichmann. Both Isser Harel and David Ben-Gurion know this is a bad idea: Eichmann has proven his willingness and ability to escape justice by fleeing to Argentina in the first place, andis likely to try and flee again. In addition to this, the Argentine government is more than friendly toward its expatriate Nazi community, and hostile to Israel; they would likely head off any conventional attempts to send Eichmann to court for his crime, and, failing that, it is not unthinkable the Argentine government would assist his escape. With this in mind, Ben-Gurion poses to Isser Harel a difficult request: Eichmann must be captured and brought to Israel. The easier ask would be assassination, but Ben-Gurion's request is clear: killing Eichmann is not the issue; the crimes he has committed must be known. In light of the rising Neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic movements in Western Europe, justice, not retribution, needs to be carried out.

Chapter 5 Summary

By March of 1960, Zvi Aharoni is in Buenos Aires. The first objective of the mission is to verify the address of "Ricardo Clement"; the original address at Chacabuco Street is the first step. Arriving at the house, they find some confirmation that a man ("the German"), a woman, and three children lived here, but have moved some weeks prior. Under the pretext of delivering a fancy cigarette lighter to Nikolas Klement, Aharoni probes to see if he has found the Eichmanns or not. At an auto garage near where one of the Klement boys is said to work, they meet a young man, Dito. He is unwilling to give his address, but lets slip that his family has moved to a different neighborhood. Careful not to tip off their presence, they begin to tail Dito, believing him to be Dieter Eichmann, one of Eichmann’s sons.

After several days, Aharoni is able to trace the Eichmanns to a small, single-story, unfinished brick house in a remote area of the city. There, Aharoni sees a middle-aged woman and a young child he believes to be the fourth, as-of-yet unidentified Eichmann child. Employing a ruse that they are working for an American company looking to build a factory in the area, they acquire a list of the names of the owners of the houses. On this list, they happen upon a "Veronika Liebl de Fichmann,"a name they believe to be a purposeful misspelling of "Eichmann."To confirm their speculations, they continue to search the area. On March 17, 1960, while driving across from Garibaldi Street, they notice a man in his late fifties, roughly five feet, eight inches in height. That night, Aharoni cables back to Harel a coded message: they have found Eichmann and the operation may proceed.

Chapter 6 Summary

In Tel Aviv, Isser Harel begins to plan the mission. Argentina has a large German community, and the Mossad have long suspected that many high-ranking Nazis escaped there after the war. Eichmann will not be easy prey; he is well-versed in intelligence tactics, and is likely armed. The operation is divided into three parts: first, capture Adolf Eichmann without being detected. Second, hold him in a safehouse, away from the authorities likely sent to find him. Third, find a way to get Eichmann out of the country, and back to Israel. In each of these parts, any number of things could go wrong, putting the agents in jeopardy and causing an international crisis. To prevent these outcomes, everything must be planned and executed perfectly. To begin, Aharoni sets to work gathering intelligence, beginning with an up-to-date photograph of Eichmann.

Aharoni sets up the first "hide site" no more than 160 yards from the Eichmann house, where he takes photographs of the area and makes sketches of the buildings and streets, in order to help the extraction team. Following another near-disaster, via an accident with their vehicle, Aharoni moves up his plans. With the help of a sayan—an freelance agent tasked by the Mossad for part of a mission— Aharoni prepares and deploys a briefcase camera. The ruse is simple: the sayan poses as a young man looking to buy a home in the area, while taking photographs of the Eichmanns. The plan goes into action on Sunday, April 3; the sayan strikesup a conversation with Eichmann's neighborswhile surreptitiously photographing him and his son. By April 9, Aharoni is back in Tel Aviv, able to report confidently to Isser Harel that he has positively identified Eichmann.

Chapters 4-6 Analysis

Isser Harel tasks Zvi Aharoni with traveling to Argentina to confirming Adolf Eichmann's likely alias of "Ricardo Klement."This represents the first time the Israeli intelligence and security services actively pursue the theory. Their methods are much more professional than those of the informal investigators, albeit slower. Zvi Aharoni, in particular, has done similar work in the past. Israeli Prime Minster David Ben-Gurion becomes actively interested in capturing Eichmann. His motivation however, is different: retribution is less important to him. More important is the practical gain to finding Eichmann: blunting the rise of the Neo-Nazi movement globally.

Aharoni's methods are much less direct than the Hermanns. He hires a series of couriers to learn Eichmann's address. This proves difficult, as the name "Eichmann" is not listed on any property, and Eichmann’s sons are growing suspicious. Aharoni is stunned by the poverty in which Eichmann lives, but not enough to doubt what he has discovered. Eichmann is clearly a sophisticated target, who has taken many measures to hide himself and not appear suspicious. However, it appears his family is still using the name "Eichmann," though not in relation to the property. Aharoni is persistent enough to track the various leads to Chacabuco Street, where he finds a man fitting the description.

Although he is certain it is Adolf Eichmann, he makes no attempt to engage him, knowing that any such action would give him away. Eichmann has quickly changed residences before, and the investigation remains precarious. However, once Eichmann's identity is confirmed to Isser Harel, the plan shifts from locating Eichmannto capturing him. The Mossad have a great deal of confidence in one another, corresponding to their carefulness and professionalism; in this instance, Isser's trust in Aharoni's qualities pays off. The picture they are bringing together of Adolf Eichmann shows evidence of a competent and determined adversary. Eichmann has proven that he has been willing to throw off all of the trappings of his former power and keep to an austere life. Furthermore, Harel realizes the degree to which Eichmann's flight from Germany has been sponsored and supported by official powers; this makes legal options for extradition more difficult. Thus, the responsibility for Eichmann's capture will fall to Harel and the Mossad.
