Background

Series Context: The Percy Jackson Books

The Percy Jackson series is set in the regular modern world, except that the ancient Greek gods are real. Their home, Mount Olympus, hovers over the Empire State Building in Manhattan. All of the Greek gods, including minor deities, can and do have children with humans; these children are demigods. Demigods inherit powers from their divine parents. The three most powerful gods, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, are not meant to have children as their offspring tend to be too powerful and dangerous. Perseus “Percy” Jackson is a son of Poseidon who first learns of his demigod status at the age of 12. He is able to control water, breathe underwater, and communicate with horses and sea creatures. All demigods run the risk of being attacked by monsters from Greek mythology, but Percy is particularly at risk because his father is so powerful. Percy attends Camp Half-Blood, a training camp for demigods. There, he meets Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, who later becomes his girlfriend. He also learns that his long-time friend, Grover Underwood, is actually a satyr who has been tasked with protecting him.

In Percy’s world, all deities, monsters, and magical creatures can hide in plain sight using the Mist, a magical glamor that prevents people from seeing anything out of the ordinary unless they are paying very close attention. Percy’s main weapon is Riptide, a sword that looks like a pen until the cap is removed. At the end of the fifth book in the Percy Jackson series, the gods offer Percy immortality as a reward for preventing widespread destruction on one of his quests. Percy refuses, instead asking that all Greek gods simply recognize their offspring so that no demigod children have to feel isolated or confused. The first five books in the series proceed in chronological order, after which the story continues with The Heroes of Olympus, another series of five. The Chalice of the Gods comes next, followed by The Wrath of the Triple Goddess (2024) and another planned sequel. The Trials of Apollo is a series of five that takes place after all these other works and features Percy Jackson as a side character.

Literary Context: Greek Mythology

The Percy Jackson books aim to introduce younger readers to the stories and characters from Greek mythology. These popular myths were the religious doctrine of ancient Greek polytheism, which was practiced in and around ancient Greece from approximately the ninth century BCE to the fourth century CE. In Greek myth, the world was created by powerful beings called titans. They gave birth to the gods, who later took control. Twelve main gods, called the Olympians, rule the universe, with many other minor deities controlling various aspects of the natural world. The twelve Olympians are Zeus, god of thunder; Poseidon, god of the ocean; Athena, goddess of wisdom; Artemis, goddess of the hunt; Apollo, god of the sun and poetry; Aphrodite, goddess of love; Hephaestus, god of the forge; Hera, Zeus’s wife and the goddess of fertility; Demeter, goddess of the harvest; Hermes, the messenger god; Ares, god of war; and either Hestia, goddess of the hearth, or Dionysus, god of wine. Hades, god of the underworld, is also a powerful god, but he does not rule from Olympus.
