Part 5, Chapter 29 Summary: “Grendel and His Mother: Present Day”

Content Warning: This section of the guide includes discussion of death.

In Cai’s room, Devon sees that he’s been reading her text messages from Ramsey. Cai becomes angry at Devon for keeping secrets. Devon admits that she’s been working with Ramsey, as Ramsey has the power to kill Cai at any moment. She tells him about their past and about Jarrow and agrees to always tell him the truth. Cai agrees to stay by her side as long as she takes him with her to meet Jarrow.

Part 5, Chapter 30 Summary: “Happily Never After: Ten Months Ago”

Devon and Cai arrive in Brighton. It’s the first time either of them has seen the sea. At the water’s edge, Devon watches for Jarrow. They go to their hotel, and then Devon returns to meet Jarrow. He’s accompanied by his sister, Vic. He fills Devon in on his exile from his family and encourages Devon to come away with them. Devon tells him about Cai’s explosive. Jarrow wants Devon to abandon Cai, and they begin to argue. Vic comes to Devon’s defense and encourages Jarrow to help. They come up with a plan to make a device that blocks the signal around Cai’s explosive.

Part 5, Chapter 31 Summary: “No More Secrets: Present Day”

Devon and Cai once again go to meet Jarrow on the beach, this time in Scotland. Although Cai has met them before, he was too young to remember. Jarrow reveals his signal blocker, a device that Cai needs to carry with him. They discuss the logistics of running away. Devon explains that Mani will help her secure the Redemption and then join them on their journey. Devon and Cai go shopping for supplies, and Devon buys a new bag for Hester. Back at the manor, Devon gives Hester her gift and invites her to run away with them at seven o’clock that evening.

Part 5, Chapter 32 Summary: “Dark Horse: Present Day”

Devon and Cai wait for their appointed time to leave. Just before seven, they meet Mani, who has secured a case filled with Redemption. On their way out, they see Hester and Killock arguing. Devon goes to investigate while Mani and Cai continue on to a meeting place in the manor’s labyrinthine maze.

Part 5, Chapter 33 Summary: “Into the Labyrinth: Present Day”

Devon greets Hester once Killock leaves; Hester admits that Devon has upended her life. She agrees to run away with them, but as they prepare to depart, Ramsey arrives earlier than planned. They run to meet Cai and Mani and are attacked along the way. Hester is shot by an arrow. They continue on and encounter Killock and Ramsey. Ramsey activates his explosive device, which doesn’t work. The Ravenscars and the knights begin to fight, and Devon and Hester run away.

Part 5, Chapter 34 Summary: “The Knight and the Dragon: Present Day”

Devon and Hester arrive at the maze. Hester reels from her betrayal of her family, and Devon kisses her. Ramsey follows them into the maze. They reconnect with Cai and Mani, only to be accosted by dragons and knights. Hester kills one of the knights, a close friend of Ramsey, and Ramsey shoots Heather. Devon attacks Ramsey, and they fight. Cai throws Devon a pair of garden shears to defend herself, and she fights Ramsey with them. Ramsey manages to take them and tries to stab her with them. Cai attacks Ramsey from behind and feeds off his brain.

Part 5, Chapter 35 Summary: “No More Fairy Tales: Present Day”

Devon regains consciousness and assesses the damage. Cai has now absorbed Ramsey’s essence and speaks to Devon with his voice. Devon reaches Hester and Mani, both of whom are safe. Hester reveals that her new handbag absorbed most of Ramsey’s shot. Cai warns Devon through Ramsey’s voice but explains that a part of him forgives her. The group prepares to run away, and Devon vows to go back for Salem when she’s ready.

Part 5 Analysis

It’s only here that Victoria “Vic” Easterbrook, a figure alluded to as a distant myth, finally makes an appearance. Vic is a foil and sharp contrast to Devon—quiet, soft-featured, soft-spoken, and feminine: “like a Jane Austen heroine albeit with Mediterranean coloring” (257). However, she and Devon share a camaraderie over their mutual experiences with Patriarchal Oppression. It’s Vic who stands up for Devon and offers her support when Jarrow is unable to.

The closing chapters string together an array of rapid-fire plot points as each central character works toward their goals—many of which are in conflict with one another. At this point, all the possible paths that Devon could have taken at any stage of her story have merged into one inevitable conclusion. Devon and Hester’s romance is finally given space to emerge, starting with Hester’s Chanel handbag—something that Devon would normally never buy, showing her growing affection for and understanding of her new friend. The handbag—and relationship—become especially important at the novel’s climax, with the handbag saving Hester from absorbing the worst of her wound. In this way, the novel alludes to the protective properties of love.

The novel escalates tension and suspense by introducing a new time constraint: Ramsey arrives ahead of schedule, perhaps rightly suspicious of Devon’s loyalty. This sends Devon’s carefully curated plan into disarray. When Ramsey attempts to activate Cai’s explosive, it severs the last family bond between them and illustrates how far Ramsey has fallen. The climax occurs when Devon and Ramsey finally meet one-on-one after years of unbalanced status and losses on both sides. At this point, neither has the benefit of their allies; they are stripped down to their core, raw forms. When Ramsey finally falls, it’s in the same way Matley did: painfully, and with a complete loss of self. Ironically, this leaves some part of Ramsey alive in Cai’s consciousness—the part that is able to make peace.

The novel’s conclusion hints as to where the characters will go next, with Devon vowing to return one day for Salem. However, there is no current sequel to The Book Eaters.
