Discussion/Analysis Prompt

How do truths about the Darkling eventually come to light? What events support the assertion that the Darkling is an antagonistic character? Do you think the Darkling is beyond redemption?

Teaching Suggestion: It may be difficult for students to analyze character growth and the changing perspectives on characters because it occurs throughout the novel. Students may find it beneficial to discuss the Darkling in small groups prior to responding. It may be helpful to encourage students to develop a definition of redemption and finding specific examples from the book that support how the Darkling is or is not beyond redemption. Consider encouraging students to record thoughts and examples in writing before the discussion; they can work together to create their own graphic organizer for recording ideas.

Differentiation Suggestion: Students who may benefit from additional focusing strategies might use a supplied graphic organizer during the discussion. An organizer could have one column for evidence the Darkling is beyond redemption and one column for evidence refuting this argument.
