Parts 6-7Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 6: “Friday” - Part 7: “Saturday”

Part 6, Chapter 20 Summary: “It Was That Boy”

Eva calls her mother, who is surprised to hear from her daughter, since Eva usually only calls on holidays and birthdays. Lizette now runs a pageant consulting business, and she steps away to take the call. Eva asks her if Shane was there, asking to know the real story about what happened that day. Lizette admits that Shane was telling the truth. However, Lizette says, she lied to protect her daughter, and Eva should thank her—this young man had fooled her, kidnapped her, and hurt her. Furious, Eva explains that she was cutting herself and using substances to find relief from her migraines and her life. Lizette suggests houseplants; according to their ancestors, the plants will suck up all the bad juju. Eva accuses her mother of being jealous, and Lizette responds that daughters always blame their mothers for their mess. Angry, Eva hangs up.

Part 6, Chapter 21 Summary: “What A Coincidence”

Now knowing the truth, Eva goes to Shane’s house. Shane admits that he didn’t find her after he was released from jail because she was already a success. He didn’t want to ruin it for her, and he was convinced that he destroyed everything he touched. The couple spend the night together, and Eva invites him to Belle Fleur, Louisiana, while she researches her family history. He agrees, and the pair fall into a deep sleep.

Part 7, Chapter 22 Summary: “Word Traveled Fast”

The narrative jumps to Cece’s party at her luxurious Manhattan penthouse, to which she’s invited fashion designers, artists, filmmakers, and authors like Eva and Shane. Earlier that day, the two of them had an exchange through text messaging where they agreed that this impromptu party must be a pretense and that Cece is hosting it merely to get the gossip on their relationship. Eva told Shane there’s no use trying to hide details from Cece, who has an uncanny ability to find out anything she wants.

Once at the party, Eva spills all the details to Belinda and Cece. Everyone is talking about the couple throughout the party. Then Shane kisses Eva’s temple, and they hold hands, making it official in front of the New York Literati. Cece gasps with joy.

Cece’s apartment also has a lower level, and she’s arranged this space to be a “kiddie wonderland” so the guests can bring their kids and leave them in this space. Audre is stuck here with the other children, all of whom are much younger than she is. She can hear the grown-ups talking and laughing upstairs; more than ever before in her life, Audre experiences “FOMO” (fear of missing out), and she makes her way upstairs to the party.

Part 7, Chapter 23 Summary: “That Family Feeling”

Cece asks Shane how he could never mention Eva to her. According to Shane, it never came up, but Cece declares that all is forgiven, seeing how happy the two are now.

Cece drags Eva away to introduce her to someone, and Shane is left awkwardly alone. Soon, however, Audre finds Shane, and they begin to talk. Shane’s phone keeps buzzing, and he sees that Ty is calling; he texts Ty letting him know he will call him back soon. Audre asks if Shane will be nice to her mother, and she offers some advice. Audre tells him that Eva is scared and lonely and often feels guilty about who she is and her disability; Shane needs to make her feel happy about herself. Shane begins crying when he hears this, but Audre makes him promise. She also invites Shane to Audre and Eva’s brunch at Ladurée; the brunch is one of Audre’s traditions before leaving for the summer with her dad in California. He agrees and thinks this must be what it feels like to be a part of a family.

Meanwhile, Ty shows up at the house where he’s supposed to meet the producer. O-Mike, the producer, asks Ty to have the money ready in an hour. Ty knows that Shane said this wasn’t a good idea, so he brought a gun just in case. O-Mike refuses to let him see the studio before receiving the money, and suddenly things feel wrong. With his hand in his pocket, Ty calls Shane, praying he will pick up.

Part 7, Chapter 24 Summary: “Fabulous History”

Cece introduces Eva to fashion editor Jenna Jones and her filmmaker husband, Eric. Jenna compliments Eva’s cameo ring and comments that it looks over a century old and must have a long history. Jenna asks about how her movie is coming along, and Eva shares details about the director, Dani Acosta, who wants to make the characters white; both Jenna and Eric agree that such whitewashing is terrible, and Eric—an award-winning director—offers to direct the movie. Both Eva and Cece are thrilled.

When Eva joins Shane and Audre on the terrace chatting, she is shocked but happy that Audre has invited Shane to brunch. Shane, still reveling in the feeling of being part of a family, ignores Ty’s repeated calls.

Parts 6-7 Analysis

Now that Eva knows the truth and has forgiven Shane for leaving 15 years ago, these chapters offer a deeper exploration into what these characters want—a home. Shane thought he ruined everything he touched, so he turned to alcohol. Especially after the traumatic loss of his foster mother, he never thought that he could have a family. Eva’s mother dragged her from place to place, and Eva has never had a room that was hers and instead cycled through rooms at the same pace her mother cycled through men. She, like Shane, had no safety at home, and they both found what they needed in each other.

For Eva, this relationship—this new sense of “home”—is more than for herself and her daughter. She can finally change the story of the Mercier women and the men who always leave. Likewise, Shane finally believes that he deserves a family, something he never had.

Shane and Eva’s connection is inseparable from their traumatic pasts; instead, these things are profoundly interwoven, and the two of them find what they thought they couldn’t have, changing what they think they deserve.
