Background

Authorial Context: Yoko Tawada

Yoko Tawada, the author of Scattered All Over the Earth, is a renowned Japanese author with a unique career. Tawada was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1960, but since the early 1980s has lived in Germany. Her time in both Japan and Germany has led her to explore literature in both languages. Tawada’s time in Europe and ability to write in multiple languages greatly influences her work, as can be seen in Scattered All Over the Earth, as the novel takes place all over the continent and features those who speak different languages getting to know each other throughout their journey. As an exophonic writer—one who writes outside of her native language—Tawada explores the complex relationships between language and identity, and she is particularly interested in the new forms of meaning that arise as languages shift into new cultural contexts. Many of Tawada’s works are also defined by their speculative nature, with Scattered All Over the Earth exploring a world in which Japan has disappeared. Similarly, her work The Emissary, explores Japan in the aftermath of a gigantic disaster that changes the face of the nation and its culture. In this novel, children are born weak, to the point in which they cannot walk, shifting the burden of caregiving and working to the elderly. Scattered All Over the Earth is the first novel in an expected trilogy, with the second novel, Suggested in the Stars, which follows the group as they travel to help Susanoo find his voice again, set to be published in 2024. The trilogy will conclude in 2025 with the publication of Archipelago of the Sun. Tawada has received numerous awards and prizes for her writing, including the National Book Award for The Emissary in 2018.

Genre Context: Speculative Fiction and Globalization

Scattered All Over the Earth is a work of speculative fiction, taking place in an imagined future shaped by real-world, present-day events. In the world of the novel, climate change has transformed the geography and geopolitical structure of the Earth—with sea-level rise erasing the archipelago of Japan—and mass displacement leads to cultural transformation. Speculative fiction has a long history intertwined with both the science fiction and fantasy genres. It often raises “what if” questions about what would happen if some aspect of reality were dramatically altered. For example, Scattered All Over the Earth explores the possibilities of nations disappearing in likely climate disasters and considers the impact that the resultant mass migrations will have on culture. In doing so, the novel engages with current events in Europe, as both political and climate refugees from around the world come to the continent, bringing with them languages and traditions unfamiliar to many Europeans. In the novel, some examples of this cultural globalization include the restaurants combining different cuisines, as well as Hiruko’s homemade language, Panska, which combines the different Scandinavian languages into one.
