Chapter 5 Summary: “The Fifth Property of Thirst Is Thwarting of Desire”

The chapter opens from Cas’s perspective. She’s composing music on the harp when there’s a knock at the door. A neighbor couple enters, carrying Sunny, unconscious and covered in cuts and blood. Cas sends the man to Schiff, requesting an ambulance. Cas rings Lou’s bell to summon Rocky. He arrives just as Sunny is being loaded onto a stretcher. No one knows what has happened or where she has been; her horse arrived at their neighbor’s property with Sunny aboard. She has hypothermia.

Rocky grills the doctors, who insist that Sunny should be taken to a hospital. He refuses, insisting that Three Chairs has “healing properties.” They’re arguing about whether an X-ray machine can be procured when Sunny regains consciousness. Through tears, Sunny reveals that Hace has married someone else.

Rocky convinces Dr. Arakawa from Manzanar to spend the night; Schiff returns the next day to inquire about Sunny’s condition. He finds Cas is in the kitchen, who asks him to help make chicken soup. As she kills the bird, Cas tells Schiff about Hace’s betrayal and about a similar heartbreak she herself endured after a romance with a man she met in Scandinavia.

Over the days that follow, Sunny refuses to leave her room, and Schiff visits Three Chairs nightly. Arakawa has told Schiff that Sunny is experiencing melancholy. Additionally, Arakawa notes that residents at Manzanar are developing symptoms of asthma. He wants Schiff’s permission to conduct a study.

After two weeks, Sunny emerges. When Schiff first encounters her one evening at Three Chairs, he broaches the subject of Hace. Sunny responds with an outburst, throwing a glass of water at Schiff and demanding that he leave.

Chapter 6 Summary: “The Sixth Property of Thirst Is Truth”

Six weeks later, Rocky arrives at Manzanar with a rocking chair he has made for Schiff as a kind of bribe: He wants Schiff’s legal advice. Rocky has been approached by a man in the beef industry inviting him to invest in a trust that will provide legal protection for the detainees’ houses and properties. Rocky needs information from Schiff about the detainees. Schiff agrees that the trust is a smart idea but worries about the detainees learning that the camp isn’t temporary.

Rocky tries to convince Cas to invest. She agrees with the concept but insists that the figures the rancher has proposed are far too small. The rancher, Lyndon Finn, arrives for supper that night. Cas meets him briefly and then exits to attend her scheduled card game. Lyndon has brought his own beef for dinner and tells Rocky about the Japanese method of raising Kobe beef. The government had ordered Lyndon to relinquish his cattle to the war efforts, but he refused.

Lyndon spends the night at Three Chairs and awakens in the morning to Cas’s harp. The narrative shifts to Cas’s point of view as she recalls touring with the instrument in Scandinavia. There, she met Karl Tomas, the man with whom she became romantically involved, who later swindled her of her money. When Lyndon enters, Cas momentarily stops playing, but he urges her to continue. Minutes later, Rocky passes by and notices that Lyndon has draped his arm across Cas’s shoulder.

The three meet with Schiff and a group of detainees who are lawyers. Rocky and Cas have invented an excuse for Sunny’s absence, not wanting her present. Lyndon presents the idea of the trust to the lawyers, thus revealing that their internment is to last as long as the war does. The men are receptive to the plan but are quick to point out the same flaw Cas criticized: More money will be necessary. Suddenly, a commotion ensues, and Rocky’s dogs appear, followed by Sunny. The meeting quickly ends.

Back at Three Chairs, Sunny fumes but prepares a salad to accompany the elk chili Rocky has started. Cas enters, also angry. She accuses Sunny of behaving foolishly and ignoring Schiff’s romantic interest. As Sunny continues to prepare dinner, Lyndon, Rocky, and Cas discuss the trust. Rocky explains that aside from Three Chairs, he has no assets left, having spent his fortune battling the Los Angeles Department of Water.

Chapter 7 Summary: “The Seventh Property of Thirst Is Spontaneous Combustion”

Sunny learns that Schiff has enlisted. He has remained at Manzanar to aid the new director as they transition. One night, Schiff is in his barracks, deciding what to do with his books upon leaving, when Sunny enters and confronts him about enlisting. He interrupts her tirade by kissing her.

Sunny and Schiff spend the night together, and she asks him if he would have left Lone Pine without saying goodbye. He insists that he would have found a way to say goodbye. Because Schiff is scheduled to leave in 10 days, Sunny suggests that they go on a trip together. Schiff, concerned about his lack of outdoor experience, asks if they might go camping. Sunny plans a trip to Yosemite including two nights in a hotel in which she recalls her parents once staying.

Schiff wants to leave immediately, so they decide to sleep in Sunny’s truck bed en route that night. When night comes, they park and study the stars. As Schiff asks Sunny about Rocky’s story of meeting Albert Einstein, suddenly, men from the Los Angeles Department of Water appear, guns drawn. Sunny responds by pulling a gun of her own, and the men leave when they learn the pair’s identity.

Later, Schiff is sent to Japan, though he assumed he’d be sent to Europe.

Chapters 5-7 Analysis

This section’s major plot points significantly impact Sunny. Although she has been physically separated from Hace for months, she has remained faithful to their commitment to marry. Little indication is given as to the plausibility of her commitment, given Hace’s exile to Mexico after his association with the elephant’s death. Nonetheless, Sunny’s love for him is unwavering and appears to be the force that has kept her from succumbing to Schiff’s romantic overtures, subtle as they’ve been. Sunny is thus devastated when Hace ends the relationship, telling her that he’s marrying someone else. Because Hace is a childhood friend of both Sunny and Stryker, it’s likely that Sunny associates Hace with her late brother; losing Hace, then, is like losing a final link to Stryker. The exact details that lead to her injuries and unconsciousness are never fully revealed, but, importantly, the family initially fears that her injuries may be fatal. Sunny heals physically; however, the depression that sets in over Hace’s betrayal keeps her in bed for six weeks.

Cas, too, has suffered heartbreak in the past; though the text likewise leaves many gaps about it, she evidently fell in love with a man in Scandinavia who wronged her in some way, possibly by tricking her out of her wealth. That Cas doesn’t speak directly of the event (and the fact that the rest of the family never mentions it) reveals how devastating it was to her. As a result, Cas has apparently decided that love isn’t a part of her future. Nevertheless, Lyndon Finn’s arrival sparks her interest. Both are clearly entranced with each other, and Cas flirts with Lyndon in a way that reveals another side of her character. Importantly, too, it’s Cas who encourages Sunny to acknowledge Schiff’s romantic interest in her, revealing that Cas still believes in true romance and views Schiff’s interest objectively and evaluates it as genuine. The text doesn’t specify whether Sunny would have opened herself up to entering into a relationship with Schiff had Cas not urged her to do so, leaving this open to speculation, but the sequence of events suggests that Cas’s goading is instrumental. Sunny survives the physical injuries she sustains, but her heartbreak over Hace, as well as Cas’s devastation over Karl Tomas, reinforce the theme of Loss and Remembrance: Both relationships ended, and these endings are a significant loss for both women.

The timing of Sunny’s and Schiff’s beginning a romantic relationship is problematic given that Schiff will depart in 10 days for his new assignment overseas. Whether the relationship can endure across distance and time remains to be seen, adding another layer of conflict and suspense to the story. In addition, though Schiff expects to be sent to Europe, he’s instead assigned to travel to Japan. This calls into question whether being in close proximity with the enemy of the US will change Schiff’s views on the faultlessness of the Japanese people as the novel concludes. Although his remaining days with Sunny are limited, Schiff is happy. During his 10 days with her, he’s able to live in the moment and fully relish their time together. This suggests that their relationship, coming to fruition after so much time, has been worth the wait on his part, regardless of how long it will last.

This section further establishes Schiff’s, as well as Rocky and Cas’s, moral opposition to the detainment of Japanese Americans, further emphasizing Pursuit of the American Dream through their conviction that all citizens have the right to it. Rocky’s efforts, along with Lyndon, to protect the legal rights and possessions of those who have been detained, characterize him as a person of principles. His fiercely defending the rights he considers unassailable aligns with the relentless manner in which he has pursued legal action against the Los Angeles Department of Water. Rocky’s flaw, however, may be his refusal to admit to realistic obstacles to his goal. Cas is quick to point out that Rocky’s plans for the trust lack sufficient funds (as the lawyers at Manzanar are quick to point out too), but this reality doesn’t seem to deter Rocky (or Lyndon). Rocky’s unabashed pursuit of his goals based on his strong beliefs in basic rights is an admirable quality but may also strike some as foolhardy and even arrogant.
