After 11 days in the hospital, Hannah is leaving. When she wakes up, she finds a chocolate pudding cup in the room, and knows that Henry left it for her. She takes this gesture as a sign that she should try to find him and tell him how she feels. Gabby acts as her wing woman and encourages her to follow her heart and do what she thinks is right.
On Saturday, Hannah and Gabby are watching a movie when Ethan calls and asks if he can come by. When he and Hannah are alone, Ethan tells her that he cannot raise another man’s child, and therefore, he cannot be with Hannah. Hannah tells him she understands, and there is an understanding that they both still love one another. They express faith in the possibility that perhaps they will find each other again in the future.
Defying the rules, Hannah explores the hospital in her wheelchair looking for Henry, until she is reprimanded by a nurse. When she thinks the nurse is no longer looking, Hannah tries to escape but is caught and personally escorted to her room. When she tries to apologize, she learns that the nurse’s name is also Hannah. Hannah tells her that Henry was nothing but professional and that she was the one who crossed a line. When it is time to leave, Hannah laments that she may never see Henry again.
Gabby leaves early one morning so that Mark can come by and pack all his things; Hannah stays at the house to let him in. Before he arrives, Hannah calls her family to tell them she is pregnant. To her surprise, they are ecstatic, and wrongfully assume she got pregnant on purpose. They insist that she move to London and have the baby there, where they can help her raise the child. Hannah realizes she has never once considered moving to London.
When Mark shows up, she can tell he feels uncomfortable. Before he leaves, he tells Hannah that he never meant to hurt Gabby. Hannah does not believe that being in love absolves a person of their mistakes. She believes that people need to be ready to face the consequences of their choices. Just as he is leaving, Charlamagne pees on Mark’s shoe.
Later, when Gabby is back, Hannah realizes that she is happy with how things turned out, because ultimately it led her back to Gabby, her closest friend.
Hannah is riding back from the hospital with Mark and Gabby when both she and Gabby notice that Mark seems off. At the house, Hannah realizes that Mark is uncomfortable around Gabby for some reason. He nervously explains the things he has done to the house to make it more accessible for Hannah, and Gabby also picks up on his strange energy.
When Gabby cannot take it any longer, she demands to know what is going on. Mark tells her that he is in love with another woman and has already make plans to leave Gabby. He tells Gabby they can talk again in a few days when she has had more time to process it. Suddenly enraged, Gabby screams at him to leave, seeming to forget that Hannah is still in the room. Before Mark drives off, Hannah rolls her chair out to retrieve his copy of the housekey. He tells it is inside along with the deed and to tell Gabby that he is leaving the house to her.
Back inside, Hannah consoles Gabby. Being there with her makes Hannah realize that her home is not New York or London or even LA—her home is with Gabby.
Gabby and Hannah take Charlamagne for a walk by the LA County Museum. On the walk, they talk about high school. They remember Jesse Flint, who Gabby had a crush on and went on a date with once. Hannah informs Gabby that Jesse is newly divorced. Reflecting, Gabby realizes that Mark was never the one for her, and that she likely just settled because they were both comfortable. Hannah tells Gabby not to worry, and that everything is happening as it is supposed to.
Gabby and Hannah wake up on the floor, having spent the night there following Mark’s news. Rummaging through her bag, Hannah finds a note from Henry explaining why he needed to get away from her and expressing faith that they will find each other again one day so that he can ask her out.
Later in the day, Gabby talks about Mark, acknowledging that she was never sure that he was the one. She remembers her high school crush, Jesse Flint, and how she thought about him on her wedding day. Hannah reports that Jesse is newly divorced.
Hannah concludes that she is not going to worry too much and is going to do her best in life from this point forward given everything she has to work with.
Hannah is now in her second trimester. Gabby comes to most of her doctor’s appointments and has been doing research with Hannah about birth and parenthood. So far, Hannah is enjoying her pregnancy as well as her new job. She is thinking about working in a pediatrician’s office long term. Lately, she has been researching nursing schools; she is in the middle of doing this when Ethan calls and asks if he can come over.
When Ethan arrives, Hannah meets him at the door but tells him to speak through the door’s crack as she cannot bear to see him. Ethan tells her he has always been in love with her and continues to be; with that in mind, he is willing to help her raise her child if it means they can finally be together. When Hannah allows him to come inside the house, he kisses her; for the first time she feels like she has done everything right.
With the help of a walker, Hannah can now walk. Between insurance payouts and the lawsuit, Hannah has enough money to live comfortably. Once able to drive, Hannah buys a cherry red hatchback and immediately begins looking for a job. One morning Hannah wakes up early to go to Primo’s for a cinnamon roll. While there, she recognizes a man first from the tattoo on his arm; when he turns, she realizes the man is Henry. They reconnect, and Henry tells her he has been coming to Primo’s for months in the hopes of bumping into her. They leave the bakery hand-in-hand. When Henry kisses her, Hannah knows she has done everything right.
Hannah and Ethan have come to Carl and Tina’s to surprise Gabby for her 32nd birthday. However, Hannah has already told Gabby about the party, so when she walks in, she feigns surprise. Hannah and Ethan have left their daughter, Gabriella, with Paula, their babysitter. Hannah and Ethan have recently begun trying for another baby.
In the middle of the party, Gabby’s new husband, Jesse Flint, makes a speech celebrating her and their love. He speaks about the possibility of divine timing and parallel universes and believes that all the choices and mistakes he made in life ultimately led him to Gabby.
Catching up with the Hudsons, Hannah tells them that she is leaving the office soon to go to nursing school full-time. Later in the evening, Dr. Yates, a doctor at the practice, introduces Hannah to a man named Henry, who he hopes will join their practice. Hannah and Henry bond over a shared love of cinnamon rolls. Additionally, they also bond over their desire to help others through nursing.
Knowing that they have a sitter to watch Gabriella, Hannah and Ethan leave the party and go to a hotel. In the car, Hannah is overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude.
Hannah and Henry join the Hudsons and a large group of close friends to throw a surprise party for Gabby’s 32nd birthday. Though she wanted to warn her beforehand, Hannah does not tell Gabby about the party, so she is genuinely surprised when she walks in.
Catching up with others, Hannah reveals she is seven months pregnant with her first child. In other news, she will be able to finish her nursing degree in a year. Ethan and his girlfriend, Ella, join in on the conversation, and Hannah is glad to know that he is still in her life.
In the middle of the party, Gabby’s new husband, Jesse Flint, makes a speech celebrating her and their love. He speaks about the possibility of divine timing and parallel universes and believes that all the choices and mistakes he made in life ultimately led him to Gabby.
Over by the dessert table, Hannah and Henry have a moment alone; he tells her he loves her. Hannah reflects on how getting hit by a car in her late twenties led her to marry her night nurse. She believes it is fate.
This section brings the two storylines to a satisfying close. Though their outcomes remain distinct, the conclusion of the two storylines find both Hannah and Gabby feeling happy and fulfilled, perhaps for the first time in their lives. The fact that both Hannah and Gabby are rewarded with happy endings is the result of the plotline adhering to the traditional structure of the romance novel, which typically sees that the main characters find the love and fulfillment they have been looking for by the story’s end.
In the storyline in which Hannah decides to have Michael’s baby, her romance with Ethan finally comes full circle. That the section includes a chapter depicting their lives three years later provides insight into their new life together, as well as satisfies readers who have been rooting for the couple. In addition, this chapter validates Hannah and Ethan’s shared belief that they are karmically meant to be together, regardless of the obstacles that may arise.
In a similar vein, the introduction of Henry as a new colleague of Hannah’s validates the novel’s belief about destiny and divine timing, as it suggests that perhaps Hannah and Henry have always been fated to know each other. Moreover, the fact that this chapter includes a scene in which Ethan lovingly checks in on Gabriella further exemplifies that Ethan’s love for Hannah is so strong that he is willing and happy to raise another man’s daughter with her. This willingness to raise Hannah’s child coupled with his obvious adoration of Gabriella reflects Ethan’s character, as it demonstrates that, like Hannah, is he caring, thoughtful, and warmhearted.
In the alternate storyline, Hannah finds similar success. That she still takes a job at Carl’s office and decides to go to nursing school suggests that perhaps those events were fated to happen. As in the alternate storyline, Hannah’s reunion with Henry and subsequent marriage to him provides readers—and especially those who have been cheering for this couple—with a satisfying ending.
That Hannah views getting hit by a car as the impetus to begin the wonderful life she is living with Henry suggests that the hardships and frustration she endured in the past have been worth it. Knowing that the accident that landed her in the hospital also led her to finding Henry as well as her life’s purpose (nursing), Hannah is wholly faithful in the power of divine timing by the novel’s end. The gratitude Hannah expresses for her life and those in it indicates that, unlike in the beginning of the novel when she felt lost and purposeless, she now feels like her life has gone exactly as it was supposed to.
Also important is Hannah’s decision to maintain her friendship with Ethan after he rejects her romantically. The fact that Hannah and Ethan remain good friends in this storyline suggests that their love for one another, whether platonic or romantic, is undeniable and enduring in any timeline.
Like Hannah, Gabby gets to experience a happy ending; both storylines see Gabby divorcing Mark and marrying Jesse. The fact that Jesse is her high school crush mirrors the plotline in which Hannah rekindles a relationship with her own high school love.
