Chapters 28-36Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 28 Summary

Gabby is throwing things around the house after seeing Mark with another woman. Not knowing what to do, Hannah just stands around with the dog in tow. Gabby yells at Mark, and he desperately tries to explain himself. When he gets close to Gabby, Hannah steps in and tells him to back off. Gabby tells him to take his things and go, so the women spend the next hour waiting for him to pack up and leave. Hannah realizes in that time that she never liked Mark.

When he finally leaves, Gabby and Hannah talk. Hannah knows that Gabby is still judging her, especially now, for sleeping with someone’s husband. Hannah tells Gabby that it is okay for her to hate Mark and the other woman. When Gabby gets emotional again, Hannah tells her to squeeze her hand when the pain is unbearable, and that she will absorb half of it herself.

Chapter 29 Summary

When Gabby next visits Hannah at the hospital, Hannah shows her that she can now stand on her own. Gabby mentions that Mark has been very sweet to her lately, as well as busy with work things. Hannah gets Gabby to take the same tour she took with Henry to the vending machines, but they end up getting lost. Hannah also tells Gabby that her night with Henry brought to light her indecisiveness, and that perhaps she is just supposed to pick a life and live it.

Chapter 30 Summary

Gabby insists on going to work the day after Mark leaves to distract herself. Hannah decides to call Michael and tell him about the baby. When she does, he insists that she just get an abortion. Hannah tells him she is having the baby with or without him. Michael, now in a good place with his family, refuses to have anything to do with the child.

Chapter 31 Summary

Still lost in the hospital, Gabby tells Hannah she and Mark are going to start trying for a baby soon. Gabby finds a map of the hospital so they can navigate back to Hannah’s room. While she does, Hannah witnesses a set of parents talking to a doctor about their young daughter’s cancer. Hannah realizes that being a nurse must be a difficult but fulfilling job.

Chapter 32 Summary

Hannah goes to Ethan’s to give him the news about the baby. She is not expecting it to go well. They are about to have sex when Hannah tells him she is pregnant.

Chapter 33 Summary

Dr. Winters checks in on Hannah to set her up with her new physical therapist. She warns her that the road to recovery will be a long one, and that she will face many challenges along the way. Hannah resolves to sleep early so she can wake up in time to see Henry. When she wakes up in the evening, she discovers Henry will soon be replaced by Marlene as Hannah’s night nurse. Henry tells Hannah that their relationship needs to remain professional.

Chapter 34 Summary

Hannah tells Ethan that the baby is not his but belongs to a married man with children. Hannah tells him she does not want to lose him and understands if he cannot commit to her. She wants so badly for him to stay with her through it all, but she keeps that to herself. They tell each other that they love one another and always have before Hannah leaves to go home.

Chapter 35 Summary

Hannah’s physical therapist, Ted, continues to refer to her as Ms. Martin, though she insists he call her Hannah. Learning how to walk again is not easy, and Hannah blows up at Ted in the process. Dr. Winters dismisses Ted for a moment and has Hannah scream into a pillow for a few moments, encouraging her to let out all her frustration. Afterward, Ted comes back, and they practice walking again.

Chapter 36 Summary

Back home from Ethan’s, Hannah and Gabby cry together for the rest of the night, taking turns holding one another. The next day, they wake up feeling stronger than the day before. When Mark calls that night, Gabby answers and reports back to Hannah that he is in love with the other woman and wants a divorce. Gabby seems more accepting of the situation now, reflecting that they got together when they were both teenagers and likely just got used to being with one another. They decide to head out for cinnamon rolls, telling one another they will ultimately be okay.

Chapters 28-36 Analysis

This section sees the deterioration of both Hannah’s and Gabby’s romantic relationships. Having been rejected by Ethan following the news of her pregnancy and discovering Mark’s affair, respectively, Hannah and Gabby are at the lowest points in their lives. With the trauma of heartbreak and betrayal, these chapters also exemplify the strength of Hannah and Gabby’s bond.

The fact that Hannah and Gabby experience heartbreak in both storylines is important to note, as it suggests that perhaps their respective romantic failures were simply “meant to happen” in any timeline (230). It is for this reason that the inclusion of a plotline that sees both women experience romantic heartbreak does more than utilize a romance genre trope. Rather, that both women experience failed romantic relationships works to strengthen the novel’s central themes, such as those of friendship and divine timing. Though both women are hurting deeply, each resolves to remain strong and hopeful for the sake of the other, determined to make it past these hardships and convinced that happiness will come to each of them in due time.

These chapters also include discourse about The Existence of Soul Mates (another trope of the romance genre). Discussing the validity of soul mates in the hospital one day, Gabby and Hannah share a belief in the concept. Their faith in the idea that everyone is destined to be with one particular person reinforces another shared belief, which is that “everything happens for a reason” (230). This at once provides reassurance and a sense of comfort for both women moving forward, as well as intrigue and a sense of hope for readers who wish to see both women find the love they deserve.

This section also sees Hannah at the beginning of her physical therapy journey. Again, faced with new and unexpected challenges, Hannah finds herself frustrated by her limitations. The initial frustration Hannah experiences when she struggles through her first physical therapy session indicates that the road to recovery will not be easy. The scene in which Hannah snaps at her physical therapist highlights her sense of anger and resentment about her predicament, as well as continues to build tension in the narrative. The tension at the start of her recovery journey allows readers to anticipate the inevitable release or resolution of said tension in the coming chapters. Additionally, Hannah’s practice of screaming into a pillow to release her frustration mirrors the employment of the tension-and-release pattern within the narrative structure. Moreover, Hannah’s decision to take Dr. Winter’s advice and accept that she will need to be patient throughout her recovery journey is indicative of the personal growth that Hannah has made since the car accident.

In a similar vein, Hannah experiences a new situation in the form of a new night nurse after Henry is switched to the day shift. Hannah’s inability to spend time with Henry further intensifies her feelings of frustration, as well as makes clear that her feelings for him are more than platonic. The undeniable chemistry between Hannah and Henry and their overall romantic potential plays into a common trope in the romance genre; unable to be together given Henry’s position as her nurse, Hannah and Henry’s relationship is a prime example of the “forbidden love” trope. Hannah’s determination to get over Henry brings a sense of closure, suggesting that this relationship, despite its potential, has come to an end.
