Part 1, Chapters 13-19Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 1, Chapter 13 Summary: “Biology”

After a long night of scrolling through Korey’s social media, Enchanted is shocked when he starts texting her at school. She sends him the link to a romantic song, and although she is worried that she might have scared him off, he sends her a romantic song in return.

Part 1, Chapter 14 Summary: “When Souls Collide”

Korey and Enchanted continue to send love songs to one another, “speaking [their] own coded language” (59). One day while they are texting, Korey asks Enchanted to read 50 Shades of Grey, an erotic adult novel. Enchanted is uncomfortable, but pushes her discomfort aside. She admits that she isn’t looking forward to her Will and Willow event, and Korey says that he is always willing to talk.

Part 1, Chapter 15 Summary: “W&W Cluster”

At the Will and Willow party, a drunk Creighton starts trying to dance with Enchanted, but she is put off by his inappropriate touching and tries to escape. Creighton follows her to her room, and only leaves when Enchanted threatens to scream for help. She calls Korey, who sends his bodyguard to come and get her.

Part 1, Chapter 16 Summary: “What’s Your Emergency?”

In the present day, a concerned neighbor hears Korey Fields “screaming for his life” (69) in his apartment and calls 911.

Part 1, Chapter 17 Summary: “Save Me”

In the past, Enchanted arrives at Korey’s suite and tells him about what happened with Creighton. Korey comforts her, explaining that boys only want sex. Korey tells Enchanted that he is different, and that he would never behave like Creighton. Shea texts Enchanted to find out where she went, and Korey becomes jealous and fights to regain her attention. He promises to “get [Enchanted] in the studio for real for real” (75).

Part 1, Chapter 18 Summary: “Lesson Plan”

Korey convinces Enchanted’s parents to let her come to his private recording studio. Enchanted is excited to record her songs, but Korey insists that before they record anything, she has to understand the rules: “no one can know what goes down in here,” and he expects Enchanted to get comfortable and loose by “shedding some of them layers” (79). Korey openly admires Enchanted’s curves and calls her beautiful, and as they sing together, Enchanted feels like “[their] voices make love in the air” (81).

Part 1, Chapter 19 Summary: “Cradle Robber”

Enchanted recalls the story of how Gab and her boyfriend Jay met. Even though Gab and Jay are only three years apart in age and they started dating when they were in high school, people “called [Jay] a cradle robber and a pedophile” (83). Enchanted feels lonely on her swim team’s bus, but then Korey texts her, asking her to wear “something that shows them curves” (85).

Part 1, Chapters 13-19 Analysis

As Korey and Enchanted start to exchange romantic songs over text, the tone of their relationship shifts. The flirting becomes more serious and explicitly sexual, especially after Enchanted calls Korey for help after the Creighton incident. Korey starts to take more risks in their conversations, like bringing up 50 Shades of Grey and encouraging her to read it because it’s “Twilight fanfiction”; here, Korey uses a young adult novel to justify recommending an erotic story for adults to a teenager, attempting to undermine their significant age difference. Throughout the story, Korey continues to use age-appropriate things that Enchanted is comfortable with to lure her into more adult topics.

Creighton’s sexual harassment of Enchanted provides Korey with an opportunity to convince Enchanted that he is different from other guys, an instance of exploitation that he disguises as concern. Similarly, Korey sends Enchanted his bodyguard to manipulate her into seeing him as her protector, rather than her abuser. However, even as Korey is laying on the charm, his mask slips when Enchanted checks her phone to read Shea’s message. Korey demands complete devotion, and if he can’t hold Enchanted’s attention with charm, he will use intimidation. The moment is brief, but foreshadows Korey’s true intentions and controlling outbursts later in the novel.

While Enchanted and Korey are in the recording studio, Korey begins to create an atmosphere of secrecy. Enchanted is so lonely and eager to record her songs that she will agree to almost anything. Korey lays the groundwork to take advantage of her in this recording studio, and with Korey’s assistant Jessica keeping an eye out for Mr. and Mrs. Jones, Korey feels empowered to do as he pleases with Enchanted. Enchanted, by this point already socially isolated, now feels even more pressure to hide the details of her relationship with Korey.
