Symbols & Motifs

The Color Red

The color red is both a motif and a symbol in Five Survive. As a symbol, red signifies danger, while as a recurring motif, it is a reminder of the constant danger that the characters face. The red dot is a threatening agent in the novel, foreshadowing danger. It appears on Joyce, who dies by the sniper’s hand, and it shows up on Red, who gets shot at the end of the novel. Red gives the red dot agency: “And the red dot was still out there, waiting” (229). “Waiting” is a mobile term, connected to human attributes and abilities. By imbuing the red dot with this ability, the narrator highlights its insidiousness. Red also signifies culpability. Maddy suspects her mother’s involvement in Grace’s death because she sees red stains on her shirt, which she later realizes is blood.

Red, who holds herself responsible for Grace’s death, also associates her negative emotions with the color red: “Shame was a red feeling, a hot one, just like guilt and anger” (11). These emotions are dangerous to Red’s mental health, and her attitude toward the color red indicates her self-perception, her name becoming part of the motif. Because of her misplaced guilt, Red thinks that she caused Grace’s death. Therefore, she views herself as a problematic and dangerous agent. The fact that blood is red also triggers Red’s trauma, reminding her of Grace’s death. Seeing red and blood forces Red to imagine how her mother would have looked immediately before her death, which is an inherently traumatic image.

Claustrophobia

As a motif, claustrophobia indicates the rising tensions within the RV. As the sniper becomes increasingly violent, the RV feels more claustrophobic: “A hot tin can, shrinking, filling with holes. The night punching new eyes through the walls to watch them squirm” (256). The imagery and metaphor here, comparing the RV to a metal can, evokes the feeling of being trapped. Similarly, when Oliver proposes that they vote on whether Red remains inside the RV, Red notes that the vehicle does not provide any form of safety: “Anywhere was better than this RV” (277).

On the other hand, Arthur’s claustrophobia is a symbol of his inability to escape the plan he hatched with his father and brother or their life of organized crime. He notes feeling claustrophobic in the RV, likely because of his guilt since he likes Red and doesn’t want to be a mobster. However, this fate seems unavoidable; as mentioned in his letter, he kills Catherine, thereby becoming a part of his father’s organization. Even though he is not like Mike, he still becomes a part of the narrative of toxic masculinity by lashing out violently. Ultimately, Arthur cannot escape the repercussions of his actions and is a fugitive by the novel’s end.

The Curtains

The curtains inside the RV are a symbol that signifies Red’s PTSD and constant state of stress and anxiety. When someone is stressed, they tend to overthink and might forget what they want to do or say. Red thinks about the patterns in the curtains throughout the novel without ever reaching a conclusive answer. Instead, her thoughts randomly wander to the curtains, trying to discern the pattern before going on to her next thought. This reflects her restlessness and general anxiety about life. Red deals with intense emotions by burying them inside, and the effects of that repression peek out through her fascination with certain thoughts, phrases, or things. The group also closes the curtains to protect themselves from the sniper, and while they give the appearance of security, they don’t actually provide any safety; the sniper could simply shoot through them. As such, the curtains also symbolize the fragility of Red’s mental state, as her coping mechanisms don’t actually help her deal with her trauma.
