Part 9Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 9: “6:00 A.M.”

Part 9, “Police Radio Transcript from the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Department” Summary

The police radio transcript details what happened and that the police officer feels guilty for accidentally shooting Red. Another officer notes they caught the sniper, and the officer who shot Red confirms that Arthur ran away. Red and Maddy are in critical condition, and Oliver is dead.

Part 9, “Assistant District Attorney Catherine Lavoy Shot Dead Outside Hospital in South Carolina” Summary

The news article details the circumstances around Catherine’s death, noting she was shot by a long-range rifle outside of the hospital. The article notes that Maddy is still in critical condition. There is a lot of speculation about what happened that night in the RV and why Don, Joyce, and Oliver were found dead. The article ends with Mo Frazer saying kind words about Catherine and her contributions to the DA’s office.

Part 9, “Arthur’s Letter” Summary

The novel ends with Arthur’s letter to Red. Arthur profusely apologizes for all the pain he caused Red, and he regrets not kissing her and lying to her. He admits to killing Catherine, even though he promised to kill no one. He explains that this was his way of making things right because he knew Red wanted Catherine punished for her betrayal. He says that Reyna, Simon, and Maddy said nothing about him since the police have not come for him yet. He explains that Maddy must have known that he killed Catherine but said nothing and only nodded to him when he came to see Red. He hopes that Red can forgive Maddy. He also mentions that he followed Red back to Philly, and since Red’s father does not have medical insurance, Arthur’s dad wants to take care of her medical bills.

Charges against Frank have been dropped, but Mike will be charged with first-degree murder of Don, Joyce, and Oliver. Arthur mentions that he is a fugitive now since the police must suspect his involvement in the events of that night; he is not sure what he will do. He also tells Red that she saved the officer, who has a 12-year-old daughter.

Arthur finishes the letter asking to meet Red at Pier 68 on May 8 at 8:00 p.m. He tells her that he will understand if she does not want to see him or gives the letter to the cops, but he will wait for her. He ends the letter with yes/no checkboxes.

Part 9 Analysis

Jackson uses multimedia in the last section of the novel to imply multiple distinct possibilities, giving readers the power to imagine Five Survive’s ending. The police radio transcript, newsletter, and Arthur’s letter comprise the falling action of the novel, describing what happens after Red gets shot.

The news article highlights how Catherine’s legacy is unchanged: She died a hero, complicating the theme of Secrets, Betrayal, and Corruption. However, if Red chooses to press charges, the truth may come out, highlighting that there are multiple paths toward justice. Arthur killing Catherine to avenge Red is his idea of justice, but since Red is still in critical condition and has not reacted to any of these events, the reader is free to imagine her response. The characters are shown to have complicated senses of right and wrong; Maddy, for example, does not expose Arthur for killing her mother, indicating that she is grappling with her mother’s corruption and immorality.

Similarly, there is hope for Maddy and Red’s relationship to be mended since she was beside Red while she was recovering. While the characters are divided by class and different priorities throughout the text, they are a united front in the end, having all endured the same trauma from both the sniper and Oliver’s violence. Whether or not Red reunites with Arthur, her potential reconciliation with Maddy ends the book on a hopeful note for a better future.
