Everyone wonders who’s coming, and Oliver asks Reyna to turn on the headlights so they can see. A white truck stops in front of their RV, and Red sees that it’s an older couple in their 60s or 70s. The sniper asks them to get rid of the newcomers; otherwise, he will kill them. Oliver says that since the couple is not with the sniper, they can ask them for help, and Arthur protests that the sniper will kill them.
The man gets out and says hello, and the woman follows. She looks at Red and waves at her, and Red waves back when the sniper chimes in: “Get rid of them or they die. Open the door and tell them you’re fine” (183). Arthur and Reyna insist they need to send the couple away for their safety, and Oliver asks Simon to act like everything is fine since he is an actor.
Arthur steps down and talks to the couple, explaining that everything is fine; they just have some punctured tires. The man introduces them as Don and Joyce, husband and wife. Arthur exchanges pleasantries with them, and Oliver, deciding it is safe to step out, joins the conversation. Joyce tells them she and Don are on their way back home from their daughter’s house, who recently had a baby.
Don observes the leaked gas and asks if they called AAA. Arthur says yes and Oliver says no, then explains they do not have service. Don notices the state of the RV and seems concerned. He explains that a truck drove into the cell tower, destroying the service. When he called, AT&T confirmed that service would be restored by the next day. Red realizes that someone planned their entrapment, but Don and Joyce are not part of the plan.
Oliver excuses himself and goes inside. The sniper warns them to get rid of the couple again, and Red notices that there is a red dot on Joyce’s head. Don asks what happened to the window, and Reyna replies it was a tree. Red hears Maddy and Oliver whispering and sees Oliver dictating a note to Maddy: “Help, call the police. There’s an—” (189). Red protests, pointing out that the sniper will know and kill Don and Joyce. Oliver tells her that is impossible, and Red reminds him that the sniper will see him handing it over. Oliver mentions he has a plan for that. Red and Oliver continue to argue about putting Don and Joyce in danger.
Arthur comes in and asks what’s wrong. Oliver explains, and Arthur sides with Red, noting that it is too dangerous. When Red asks for Maddy’s support, Maddy supports her brother. The sniper tells them they have 60 seconds to get rid of Don and Joyce. When Red tries to stop Oliver again, he is violent toward her. Then he steps out and passes the note to Don while assuring him that everything is okay. Don looks at the note and looks back up nervously, pretending that everything is all right. Don encourages Joyce to get to the car and says goodbye to everyone. However, when Joyce is near the car, there is a crack, and she is shot. Don is then shot in the face.
Reyna screams, and Simon and Oliver run back to the RV. Oliver pushes Reyna in. Red, traumatized, stays frozen on the spot. Reyna declares she needs to go out and help them, and Oliver tells her they are dead. Arthur has his face pressed to the wall, shaking. Red walks into the back bedroom and screams into a pillow. When Red returns, Oliver asks her how she knew this would happen, and Red reminds him that the sniper told them what he would do. The sniper lets them know it was their fault, and Oliver shouts that they didn’t need to die.
The sniper warns them: “This is all about one of you, inside the RV. Give me what I want and your friends don’t have to die” (199). Oliver asks which one of them has the secret, and the sniper laughs and says whoever has the secret knows. Red thinks about her secret but is sure that this cannot be about her.
Simon points out that they could use Joyce and Don’s car to escape, and Maddy reminds him that not everyone will make it. Oliver supports Maddy, and as he is talking, he has a realization. Oliver turns on music and explains in a quiet voice that the only way the sniper could know their plan is if someone bugged the RV.
Everyone discusses when the sniper could have bugged the RV. Oliver warns everyone not to speak when the music is off, which they have to do to ensure the sniper is not suspicious. Oliver points to each person and assigns them a specific part of the RV to investigate.
Arthur uses the checkboxes Red draws on her hand to ask if she is okay, and she replies “NO.” He tells her that she did everything she could to help Joyce and Don, but Red still feels guilty, though she does not say this to Arthur. By the time everyone finishes checking the RV, none of them has found a bug. Oliver asks Arthur to help him check the light fittings. Still, no one finds anything.
Maddy explains that she found a photograph at the front of the RV of a man, a woman, and three girls. She asks Simon if that’s his uncle, and Simon says it isn’t. Maddy asks why someone else’s picture is in the glove compartment of Simon’s uncle’s RV.
Maddy interrogates Simon about the photograph, asking if Simon’s uncle is a stalker, and Simon assures her that the RV is likely secondhand and the picture just stayed. She asks why he is acting weird, and he eventually confesses that his uncle sells stolen cars. He also confesses that he helps his uncle sometimes. Maddy asks why he would do something like that when his parents have money, and he replies that not everyone is as rich as Maddy and Oliver. If Simon decides to go to theater school, he will have to fund it himself.
Oliver, thinking about himself and his mother’s career, asks if they are in a stolen RV, and Simon says it’s possible. Oliver becomes angry, asking if Simon knows how badly that could reflect on the Lavoys, especially Catherine. Simon also confesses that his parents don’t know that the RV is from his uncle, and when Maddy admonishes him, Simon replies that she asked him to keep everything as cheap as possible for Red.
Red is embarrassed, and Simon apologizes, but she waves it all away, pretending that she is fine. Simon apologizes to everyone for not telling the truth and then says that no one is trying to kill them for a stolen RV, so the sniper is not after them because of that. Oliver agrees but says that it could be about Simon’s uncle’s business. Simon reassures him his uncle is a low-level criminal, and killing them for his uncle’s actions would not be a punishment for him since he does not care.
Suddenly, Red realizes that she cannot hear the walkie-talkie and that she left it somewhere. Maddy asks her to retrace her steps, and Red finds it in the bathroom. The sniper is saying something, and Red replies that they understand. Oliver asks why Red did that, and she explains that otherwise, the sniper would know they were not listening.
Oliver theorizes that the bug is inside the walkie-talkie, and Red offers to check. She remembers how she used to take apart and rebuild her mother’s walkie-talkie after her death to find her voice inside it. Red confirms that there are no bugs inside the device. Oliver asks how she knows, and Red explains everything is in place. Oliver accuses her of lying, and she thinks about how the officers investigating her mother’s death also thought she lied because she said she heard a doorbell in the background of their phone call just before she was killed. However, her body was found in an abandoned power station, where there were no doorbells.
Reyna asks Oliver what he means, and Oliver deduces that one of them is working with the sniper because otherwise, the sniper could not know their plans.
These chapters indicate a move toward the climax since characters start to unravel and reveal Secrets, Betrayal, and Corruption, and tensions among the group continue to rise.
Chapter 23 shows a growing divide between Maddy and Red since, rather than agree with Red, Maddy goes along with Oliver’s plan, which ultimately leads to Don and Joyce’s death. Knowing that Maddy is one of the few people Oliver listens to, Red asks Maddy to support her, but Maddy replies they have to get help: “‘They’ll be fine,’ she said quietly. ‘We can’t not ask them to help us’” (192). The debate between the two sides is essentially about power; Oliver and Maddy, two children of privilege, believe they can outmaneuver the sniper, while Red understands that the sniper is in control. Oliver ignores the sniper’s instructions, giving Don a note in the open and expecting the sniper to act differently than he promised. As a result, the older couple is killed, and through her acquiescence, Maddy is also responsible. Maddy’s agreement with Oliver also foreshadows Chapter 35, when Maddy, rather than standing up to her brother, agrees with him again and gets shot herself.
Maddy’s support of Oliver reveals her self-centeredness and strong sense of familial obligation, while Red’s opposition, arguing against Oliver on behalf of Don and Joyce’s safety, displays her moral code. Red, having faced loss, death, and grief, cannot imagine putting other people through those feelings. She has insight that Maddy and Oliver cannot comprehend. After Don’s and Joyce’s deaths, Red goes into the back room and screams into the pillow, expressing her grief with a primal sound. Their deaths act as a catalyst for Red, forcing her to question her faith in Oliver. At the same time, her scream is muffled, indicating that Red is not yet ready to fully trust herself and voice her dissent.
Once his plan fails, Oliver cannot accept responsibility for his failure and instead tries to justify his actions. Along with his decision that leads to Don’s and Joyce’s deaths, this displays a growing divide between him and the others. In Chapter 24, Reyna tells Oliver that he should have told everyone what he was planning, to which he replies, “Oh, easy for you to say now, Reyna. I had to act quickly!” (197). However, Oliver had time to reconsider his decision because Red and Arthur tried to stop him, and Oliver dismissed their concerns. Reyna herself asked him to not ask Don and Joyce for help, and again, Oliver dismissed her opinions. Rather than take responsibility for his actions, Oliver casts about for scapegoats, another manifestation of The Dangers of Toxic Masculinity. One of his targets is Red, whom he regards with suspicion because she anticipated the sniper’s actions. However, Red simply took the sniper at his word, indicating that Oliver’s self-centeredness and sense of superiority prevent him from accurately engaging with the world and puts others in danger.
Chapter 24 introduces another plot twist, since the sniper clarifies that one occupant in the RV holds the secret that he wants. Responsibility for the group’s fate travels from outside of the RV to inside it. Before, they were trying to escape to survive; now, the characters realize that one of them holds the key to everyone else’s survival. As a result, relationships break apart, suspicions rise, and the environment transforms into one of paranoia. The first person to face everyone’s interrogation is Simon, who reveals that he steals cars with his uncle. This revelation emphasizes the class divide in the group, as Oliver and Maddy fret about their mother’s career being impacted by this information. Simon asserts that things are different for people who aren’t rich, but Oliver and Maddy remain preoccupied with their mother, once again alluding to her importance to the narrative.
