Ezra ignores Felix, and Felix obsesses over what happened between them. He feels oblivious for not realizing Ezra’s feelings sooner.
Felix tells Declan that he kissed someone. They chat about questioning their identities; Declan admits that he used to obsess over his sexuality until he found a community online. They talk about the uncertainty of the future. After hanging up, Felix googles alternatives to college; as he considers all the other options, he gains a better understanding of Ezra’s anxieties about making the right choices in life. Grandequeen69 messages Felix about his mother abandoning him, which triggers a deep pain in him. He wonders, “What do you say, when a person basically tells you that you’re not a human being?” (265).
Ezra returns to school and ignores Felix until Felix chases Ezra down to apologize. Ezra isn’t mad but asks for space, then takes a different chair than normal in class. As Felix tries to focus on painting, he can only think about the situation with Ezra, what grandequeen69 said the night prior, and how Declan is in love with Lucky but not Felix himself. Unconsciously, Felix begins to smear paint across his portraits. Jill stops him and reminds him to apply for the end-of-summer gallery, but Felix believes she is only saying this to be nice. He doesn’t want to apply only to fail.
Felix remembers that it is gender identity discussion night at the LGBT Center. Before the meeting, he sketches strangers at a cafe and realizes that any of them could be nonbinary. He realizes that not assuming who these people are helps with his art. The same folks attend the meeting as last time. The group talks about rejection from cis, gay, white men and whether it would be easier to only hang out with other trans people of color. Tom insists that they need to both fight for acceptance and create their own world where they can know they’re loved and accepted.
Felix works up the courage to ask the group how to figure out your gender identity. Bex says that it’s okay to question forever. Tom is envious that Felix’s generation is more open to exploration and tells him that “there are still hardships, but don’t forget to enjoy these years […] live them for the people who never lived past being a teenager” (277).
Later that evening, Felix is reading an exhaustive list of transgender identities when he finds “demiboy,” which the site defines as “a person who identifies as mostly or partly male, but may also identity as nonbinary some of the time, or even as a girl” (278). Felix knows right away that this term fits him perfectly; he wants to tell Ezra about it but instead posts a selfie with the caption “guess who’s a demiboy?” (279). Almost immediately, Felix realizes he accidentally posted this on his luckyliquid95 account and deletes it.
At school the next day, a red-eyed Declan confronts Felix by calling the number for Lucky right in front of him. Felix chases Declan out of the class, apologizing and attempting to explain that though this started as a prank, he has real feelings for Declan and might be falling in love too. Declan tells Felix to never talk to or look at him again.
Felix works up the courage to send an email to his mother. He writes about losing Declan, about Ezra, and about his ongoing troll. He asks, “Do you miss me? Do you still love me?” (284).
Felix stays home sick so he doesn’t have to face Declan. When he tries calling Declan, Declan texts back, “don’t ever call me again” (285). Felix tells his father about the situations with Ezra and Declan, and about emailing his mother. Felix’s dad talks about how he used to try to get Lorraine back until he realized it wasn’t a healthy love. He advises Felix is to use this time to focus on himself.
The next day, when grandequeen69 messages Felix, he remembers what his father said. He resolves, “it’s easier to accept hurt and pain, sometimes, than love and acceptance. I delete the app from my phone” (288). He focuses on himself rather than Ezra and Declan and becomes inspired to reclaim the gallery wall. He paints several new self-portraits. Instantly, he knows that these paintings will be his Brown portfolio. Leah hacks Marisol’s phone and finds that she is not Felix’s troll; Felix decides that it is time to stop searching.
Declan is reluctant to trust Felix but asks him out to lunch; he asks why Felix lied to him. When Ezra sees them walking together, Felix regrets saying yes to lunch. Felix and Declan hash out their virtual relationship; Declan says that in retrospect, it was obvious who Lucky was. At times he had hoped it was Ezra, but he was not disappointed to find it was Felix. Declan asks Felix to come to Beacon for the weekend. Felix agrees.
In this chapter group, Felix takes his father’s recommendation to heart and spends energy on himself rather than obsessing over other people, as he has been all summer. He reaps the benefits of this, finally making paintings that he wants to use for his college portfolio. Felix always painted portraits of others until Jill recommended that he try self-portraits in Chapter 12; his transition from painting others to painting himself reflects how he shifts from focusing all his energy on others to focusing on himself. It is only when Felix makes this transition that his art becomes great.
Though Felix ran out of the LGBT Center during the last discussion meeting, he decides to return. This time, Felix speaks up and asks a question he needs help answering. The resulting conversation proves validating, and later, Felix finds the word “demiboy” online and resonates with it. He shares this with the world, posting a selfie on Instagram coming out as a demiboy. Up until this point, Felix has been very nervous about telling anyone that he has been questioning his gender identity again, only briefly mentioning it to Ezra and anonymously to Declan. His Instagram post is a brave, public display of his pride for his evolving identity.
In the next chapter, he deletes Instagram to avoid focusing on his troll. After he tells Leah that he wants to stop searching for the troll, the two decide that they will continue to hang out anyway. This demonstrates that, unlike what the troll claimed, Felix does have friends beyond Ezra; Leah also genuinely cares about him. Felix realizes that he doesn’t need to waste time trying to prove anything to an anonymous troll—he knows he has friends who love him. All these actions show Felix’s growth, as he stops trying to source external validation to prove himself as worthy of love and respect.
Felix also opens himself up to heartbreak and loss in this section. He finally sends an email to his mother, facing his ultimate fear of rejection from her. After Declan figures out that Felix is Lucky, Felix decides to continue pursuing a relationship with him, thinking, “It’s easier, sometimes, to love when you know it’s a love that you can’t have. What if this isn’t healthy—for either of us?” (296). Felix decides to go to Beacon with Declan because he does not want to risk losing Declan again, ignoring what he knows deep down: that they are not right for one another. After all Felix’s growth, this situation is the last hurdle he must leap over; he knows he should not be with Declan but is too scared of losing the relationship to take action.
