Long Answer
1. When Ellie first moves to the mountain with her family, she is completely lacking in knowledge of natural remedies and is unaware of the people living on top of the mountain. As the novel progresses, Ellie learns that by acting upon one thing, she can affect other areas of her life. She learns to heal her family by first healing Cate. Ellie also develops an understanding of the importance of learning by doing. She gains confidence as she finds that those around her are benefitting from her efforts to help them. (Various chapters)
2. Ellie’s natural gift is the ability to feel what others are feeling—as she puts it, she is an “echo-girl.” Ellie can feel the pain of the bees as they die, the desperate need for Quiet to be awakened after he was pronounced dead, and her father’s desire to live even as he lies motionless in a coma. Ellie uses this gift to help her father, feeding him a brew and using pain to try to startle him awake. She also helps Cate, who has a deadly wound, to survive long enough to be brought down the mountain and tended by a doctor. In bringing Cate into her family’s home, she inadvertently helps her father wake up. (Various chapters)
3. During the Great Depression, many families had to find other means of survival as they lost the income they relied on from work. Ellie’s family is one such family, and they move to the mountain after both of her parents lose their jobs. Because of this experience, everyone in Ellie’s family is extremely strong and perseveres through the most difficult challenges. Ellie’s mother and sister long to go back to the town, which causes a divide between them. (Various chapters)
