Chapter 17 Summary: “Call the Darkness Down”

Nate shows Henry where de Quincey’s hideout is, and Charlotte notifies the Enclave that they will need to attack that night. Will and Jem are not allowed to go on the mission because they are not yet 18, but they work with Thomas to prepare the weapons. While everyone prepares, Jessamine invites Nate to play cards. Tessa, put off by Jessamine’s suggestion that her brother gamble again, worries that he may relapse. After Charlotte and Henry leave, Axel Mortmain arrives at the Institute. Will and Jem meet Mortmain outside. He tries to offer them new information about de Quincey, but Nate has already given the Shadowhunters what they need to know. Mortmain tells the Shadowhunters that the Dark Sisters are performing the spell in a different location than the one Nate gave them, so Will and Jem leave the Institute to try to intercept the Sisters. As soon as Will and Jem leave the Institute, several automatons attack, killing Agatha and threatening Sophie and Tessa.

Meanwhile, Will and Jem arrive at the Dark Sisters’ house to find only Mrs. Dark, who is about to start a ritual to revive her dead sister, Mrs. Black. The Shadowhunters confront Mrs. Dark and demand to see de Quincey, who they believe is the Magister. Mrs. Dark laughs at the Shadowhunters and reveals that de Quincey is not the Magister, but just a “poncing, preening vampire” (399).

Chapter 18 Summary: “Thirty Pieces of Silver”

Sophie and Tessa run back to Jessamine, Thomas, and Nate in the Institute, followed by the automatons and Axel Mortmain, who has revealed himself as The Magister. Nate reveals that he is working with the Magister against Tessa and the Shadowhunters in exchange for magical power and knowledge. Nate sent poisoned chocolates to kill Tessa’s Aunt Harriet so Tessa would have no choice but to follow him to London. Nate lied about de Quincey to shift suspicion from Mortmain, and he conspired with Mortmain to lure Will and Jem away from the Institute so that he could successfully recapture Tessa. Sophie, Tessa, and Jessamine run away from Mortmain and Nate to the Sanctuary, but Nate catches up to them and almost captures Tessa. Jessamine strikes Nate so that Tessa can escape.

Will and Jem defeat Mrs. Dark before she can revive her sister, then Will takes a horse to race back to the Institute ahead of Jem to try to save Tessa.

Chapter 19 Summary: “Boadicea”

Jessamine, Tessa, and Sophie lock themselves in the Sanctuary, but Mortmain mimics Will’s voice to trick Jessamine into opening the door. The automatons capture Jessamine and Sophie, and Mortmain threatens to kill them unless Tessa does what he wants. Mortmain explains that he tricked Tessa’s mother into having Tessa with a demon as part of an experiment. He gives Tessa a watch and demands that she Change into its owner. Tessa refuses and threatens to stab herself unless Mortmain leaves.

Meanwhile, Will arrives at The Institute in time for Thomas’s final moments. Jem makes it back to the Institute and finds Nate stealing the Pyxis, the demon energy container. Nate disappears with the artifact before Jem can defeat him. Will reaches the Sanctuary just as Tessa stabs herself.

Furious, Will captures Mortmain. He runs to check on Tessa to find that she tricked Mortmain and did not stab herself. Instead, Tessa Changed at the last minute into one of the bodies she had become when she lived with the sisters, only appearing dead. Will, relieved at Tessa’s survival, embraces her. Will realizes his feelings for Tessa and is terrified by them.

Chapter 20 Summary: “Awful Wonder”

In the days following the battle, the Shadowhunters hold a funeral for Thomas, and the Enclave interrogates Tessa about Mortmain and his plans. Charlotte invites Tessa to stay at the Institute while they continue their investigation, asking for Tessa’s help in the face of threats to Charlotte’s leadership. Tessa, convinced that Will cares for her, rushes to tell him that she will be staying, and he responds with cold indifference. Hurt, Tessa runs from Will to Jem, who comforts her and reminds her that they can all be family, even when Will is hateful.

Epilogue Summary

Late one night, Magnus Bane is visited by Will Herondale, who asks for his help. Magnus agrees, seeing that “some terrible turmoil was ripping [Will] apart from the inside out” (476). The novel ends with Magnus agreeing to help Will with his unnamed problem.

Chapter 17-Epilogue Analysis

The novel concludes with Tessa accepting her power, defeating The Magister, and choosing to accept love from herself and those who truly care about her. The Magister, Axel Mortmain, threatens to kill Jessamine and Sophie unless Tessa agrees to use her powers for him. This choice is the same one offered to Tessa at the start of the novel: marry the Magister and use her powers for him or watch her loved ones be killed. In a reversal of the beginning of the novel, when Tessa attempted to escape the Dark Sisters but was rescued by Will, this time Tessa saves herself and her friends by relying on her own power. She transforms into a corpse, tricking Mortmain into believing she is dead, allowing the Shadowhunters time to apprehend him. Her actions reflect not only her acceptance of her identity as a half-Downworlder but also her final rejection of the limits on Women and Power in Victorian England. After hesitating for much of the novel about whether a young woman like her ought to be a fighter, Tessa embraces her powers and her role in the fight against the Magister. The problems of Women and Power in Victorian England have not been resolved for good, however; Charlotte Branwell will be under even more scrutiny from the Clave in the subsequent books in the aftermath of de Quincey’s false conviction and Nate’s stealing the Pyxis. Tessa and other women will continue to face backlash for taking on traditionally masculine roles. But Tessa has chosen not to allow herself to be limited by the gendered expectations of society any longer.

The concluding chapters of the novel also solidify how Love in the Face of Despair Creates Hope for Tessa. Faced with a seemingly impossible choice between her friends’ lives and her own, Tessa’s love for them and herself gives her the inspiration she needs to save them all. After the battle ends, instead of seeking out Nate, who has disappeared again, Tessa chooses to stay with her found family at the Institute. Their love for her gives her hope and strength to face her uncertain future, but Tessa’s choice also demonstrates that she has learned to recognize and accept real love for herself. Similarly, despite Will and Tessa’s moment of intimacy, Will ultimately chooses to hide his feelings, creating a rift between him and Tessa. Tessa, having learned to give love to those who are willing to accept it and return love to her, chooses not to pursue Will. The author foreshadows her growing connection to Jem at the end of the novel, representing how Tessa has learned to choose healthy relationships, rather than those that are manipulative or one-sided.

The conclusion of the novel sets up the key conflicts and questions that will carry over into the sequel, Clockwork Prince. Tessa will operate as an ambassador for the Downworlders at the Institute, further developing the themes of identity and prejudice introduced in Book 1. Though The Magister has been captured, Nate is still on the loose, and the Shadowhunters do not yet understand what Mortmain’s plan is and why he needed the Pyxis. Tessa has come to accept her power but still does not understand how Mortmain tricked her mother into a union with a demon, and Brother Enoch alludes to another secret about Tessa’s origins. The final image of the novel is Tessa’s clockwork angel returning to her, but the angel’s origins and powers remain a mystery.
