When Barringer suggests that the abduction was likely a “misunderstanding,” Cassie is infuriated, convinced he is not taking the case seriously.

Part 2, Chapter 38 Summary: “Billie, December 2009”

In her senior year, Billie spends Christmas with Cassie’s family, as her mother now lives in Poughkeepsie with Sandra. Billie enjoys herself, but Cassie is irritated by her family, dismissing their gifts as cheap. Grandma Catherine died without leaving Cassie anything other than her college tuition fees. Cassie is convinced her grandmother intended to update the will in her favor.

Cassie is upset that McKay did not include her in the group invited to her family’s villa in St. Barts. Instead, she invites Billie and Remy to celebrate New Year’s at her boyfriend’s family ranch in Aspen. Cassie has been dating Jay, a Harvard economics major, for several months. Billie and Remy cancel their original plans.

On the way to Aspen, Cassie admits she is nervous about meeting Jay’s parents, whom she assumes are wealthy. However, when they reach the ranch, it is a small, one-story building 30 miles from the skiing resorts. Jay explains that his parents have gone to Chicago as there is not enough space for them all to stay there. Cassie’s disappointment is evident.

That night, when they are alone in bed, Remy observes that he and Billie would have cute babies. The comment makes Billie anxious, but she does not respond. A few hours later, they are woken by Cassie, who says they must leave. Crying, Cassie reveals that Jay’s family does not even ski, and she feels that he deliberately deceived her. On the way home, Cassie implies that she envies Billie for her low standards.

When they return home, Cassie is shocked to see Lourdes in the kitchen. She reluctantly leaves Ella with Lourdes, telling her to remain in the apartment while she checks her work messages. Feeling overwhelmed, Cassie messages Billie, asking her to contact the managers of her stores and explain that there has been a family emergency. On Instagram, she sees messages from her followers demanding more content. Cassie is suddenly aware that she cannot hear Lourdes. After searching the apartment, she cries hysterically and tells Grant they must call the police. Grant finds Lourdes and Ella on the sunny terrace.

When McKay arrives with lunch uninvited, Cassie is short with her and refuses her suggestion to take it outside. McKay questions why Cassie suddenly wants Billie back in her life and suggests she could be responsible for Ella’s kidnapping. Cassie vehemently defends Billie and is relieved when McKay leaves.

When Grant goes out, Cassie tells Lourdes she no longer needs her for the rest of the week. While she cannot bring herself to fire her housekeeper face-to-face, Cassie intends to do so later by text. Lourdes leaves, upset and confused, and Cassie curls up on the nursery floor next to Ella’s crib.

Part 2, Chapters 26-39 Analysis

In the aftermath of Wade’s death and Ella’s kidnapping, the separate timelines echo one another. Wade’s literal fall is juxtaposed with Cassie’s sensation of plummeting into the abyss after Ella disappears. The similarities highlight the effects of trauma on Cassie as her polished veneer crumbles. Cassie’s disheveled appearance reflects her inner turmoil as she becomes paranoid and consumed by anxiety.

Ironically, Cassie’s “unraveling” involves casting off the life she has cultivated and a return to more authentic values. In an epiphany, she turns away from social media, recognizing “[h]ow little it actually matters, the validation of these strangers” (245). Furthermore, she realizes that inviting “thousands of random people into [her] world” is potentially dangerous and may have put her daughter at risk (249).

Lovering explores the intersection of The Shifting Dynamics of Friendship and The Consequences of Concealing the Truth as Cassie turns to her childhood friend, Billie, in her time of need. Cassie’s sudden dependence on Billie’s support is imbued with situational irony. While Billie is Cassie’s most loyal friend, she is also the perpetrator of the crime against her. The unhealthy foundations of the women’s renewed intimacy are emphasized in Billie’s joyful response. Despite the lies she must maintain to preserve the friendship, Billie feels “that something in the universe has been righted” (212). The toxic nature of this dynamic is highlighted in the “Bye, Baby” motif. The phrase becomes a reference to Billie’s kidnapping of Ella rather than an affectionate childhood nickname. Ella’s abduction plays on Cassie’s deepest fears that she will be discovered and punished for her role in Wade’s death. Meanwhile, Billie’s satisfaction at being needed by Cassie is tainted by the need to lie to those she cares about and her fear of being exposed as the kidnapper. Lovering creates narrative tension through the various factors that threaten Billie’s equanimity, including McKay’s suspicions, Detective Barringer’s investigation, and Alex’s involvement in the case.

The ongoing backstory in this section of the novel highlights how Billie’s actions in the present repeat patterns of behavior from the past. Her nervous procrastination over telling Alex she does not want children mirrors the trajectory of her earlier romance with Remy. Furthermore, the neglect of her relationship with Alex to be with Cassie echoes how Billie abandoned her college friends, Esme and Becca, when Cassie summoned her to Harvard. In both cases, Billie is shown to respond to her friend’s neediness with loyalty despite Cassie’s inconsistent attitude toward their friendship. At Harvard, Billie serves as a support to Cassie while she attempts to cultivate a new friendship circle that will ultimately usurp Billie. Lovering suggests that Billie’s character is trapped in a cycle of behavior that leaves her unable to move forward with her life.

Cassie’s backstory returns to the theme of Class and Social Mobility. Her desperate attempts to penetrate McKay’s social circle at college mirror Billie’s bids to get closer to Cassie in the present. In these chapters, Lovering hints at the emotional sacrifice Cassie pays in her pursuit of upward mobility. Her determination to find a “blue-blood guy” with “airtight lineage” causes her pain as she feels compelled to break up with boyfriends Kyle and Jay (186). The decisions reflect her prioritization of head over heart.
