The narrator re-introduces Mulch Diggums, the dwarf with whom Holly interacted when she first arrived at the LEP. Because Mulch has consistently stolen from humans and broken the Book’s rules, he gave up his magic. He has been arrested a number of times and spent three hundred years moving in and out of prison.
Mulch is an expert tunneler. Dwarves tunnel by unhinging their jaw, eating dirt, processing it, and “eject[ing]” it. He gets into a fight with a group of goblins after being arrested, but it is broken up by LEP officers who tell him that Commander Root needs him above ground.
In Tara, Mulch surreptitiously steals Root’s field-access card before he follows him to a view of Fowl Manner. When Root reveals that he wants Mulch to break into the building since he has already lost his magic, Mulch bargains for a lighter sentence: 70 years in a solitary cell (because he knows that he can escape from it).
Starting to dig, Mulch aims for the wine cellar. Following the wine’s residue through the earth, he tunnels into Fowl Manor. He creeps through the house, looking for Holly and for clues about Artemis’s knowledge of fairies. He has a sneaking suspicion that they are being tricked. However, he finds the small safe and is thrilled when he unlocks it. He also feels gas building up inside him, so powerful that when he lets it out, much of the dirt inside of him flies out. This topples Butler, who was attempting to ambush Mulch, and knocks him unconscious. Mulch takes the Book and leaves the safe room.
Sitting at his computer, Artemis surveys his monitors and realizes that his cameras are being looped. He fixes this, bringing his camera back to real-time, and then sees Butler approach Mulch and realizes that Holly intends to bury her acorn just as Juliet is about to walk into her cell. Juliet, however, has left her walkie-talkie behind, so Artemis cannot warn her.
Holly slams her bed into the concrete underneath it until she sees dirt breaking through. She manages to tuck the acorn into it, completing the Ritual. In moments, she is full of magic. When Juliet enters, she starts to remove her mirrored glasses, and Holly uses the opportunity to use the mesmer on her, asking her questions about who is in the house. Holly tells her to stay inside the room.
Holly runs into Mulch, who reveals that he found a copy of the Book. Holly shields herself.
Artemis considers the situation but recognizes that it has little effect on his plan since Holly still has to obey his command to remain in the house. He is prepared for when the time-stop ends.
Meanwhile, Mulch escapes from the house, gives his biological monitor to a rabbit, kills it, and creates a false cave-in so that he can escape.
Foaly reports that Mulch’s heart stopped, but he thinks it odd that it was beating so fast. However, he and Root are interrupted by the team analyzing Root’s conversation with Artemis. They think that they have an invitation to enter Fowl Manor if Artemis is dead, since Artemis said that no fairy could enter while he’s alive. Root decides that they’ll give Artemis the ransom, use the blue rinse, and then retrieve the ransom.
Cudgeon enters and reveals that he was put in charge. He plans to send a troll into Fowl Manner. Root feels betrayed by his friend, who only wants the glory for himself. However, both Root and Foaly think that the troll will only cause more trouble since it can’t be controlled. Root tells Foaly to contact the Council in charge of the LEP.
Moving through the house, Holly plans to cause as much damage as she can until Artemis lets her go. She sneaks into a room where she finds Artemis and her own equipment. She manages to hear a broadcast from Foaly explaining that Cudgeon is in charge and that a troll will soon enter Fowl Manor. She punches Artemis and prepares to face the troll.
Pulling Juliet from Holly’s cell, Butler watches as the front door to the manor is blown open, and the troll enters. For the first time in years, he feels afraid. The troll attacks, stabbing Butler through the chest.
Seeing that Butler is fatally injured and Juliet is in danger, Holly intervenes, fighting off the troll as best as she can. When he slams her into the wall, she is just in reach of Butler, and she uses her magic to heal him. Butler stands up, puts on the suit of armor knocked near to him by the scuffle, and attacks the troll with a mace, nearly killing it. Holly asks him to spare the creature, reminding Butler that he owes her for saving his life. Butler finds a trolley and ejects the troll from the house.
Suspenseful moments and quick decisions continue to help in demonstrating indirect characterization in this section of chapters. The introduction of Mulch, for example, shows how far Root is willing to go to defeat Artemis, as Mulch is a criminal. While he provides useful information to the commander, Mulch will also rob the fairies of the returned half of the ransom. Mulch is unique in that Artemis would be unaware of fairies who forfeit their magic, making him the perfect candidate to break into Fowl Manor. For once, Artemis is caught off guard, and the fairies nearly have the upper hand, looping the cameras, finding Holly, and sending a troll into the property.
Artemis too is left unattended, in “possibly the first time [Butler] had ever abandoned Master Artemis in a time of crisis” (219). Touching on the theme of Caring for One’s Family and People, Butler gives priority to his sister’s safety in this instance; as a result, Holly gets some retribution, but her empathy for Juliet also ultimately pushes her to intervene in the troll’s fight. Without doing so, Artemis’s scheme would have turned out very differently, and Holly steps into the role of the novel’s hero, doing the right thing despite her own personal best interests.
Butler gets the opportunity to surprise the fairies in this section of the novel. Root’s and Foaly’s reactions add humor to the situation, with the narrator adding that the video of Butler’s encounter is now “something of a legend, initially doing the rounds on the Amateur Home Movies cable shows and ending up on the LEP Academy Hand-to-Hand curriculum” (235). It is a comical note to an otherwise serious scene in which Butler is near death. The failure of the troll to kill Artemis and his cohorts will also prove devastating to Cudgeon’s assertion of leadership.
The troll’s entrance into Fowl Manor is also critical for The Blending of Science and Magic. By saving Butler after the troll attack, Holly not only builds trust with the bodyguard but also shows Artemis how magic can affect his life in a very real way. This moment, significantly, provides the impetus for his “wish” in the final chapter of the novel. Likewise, it also serves as a kernel of doubt in Butler’s trust in Artemis, as he grows ever more nervous about holding Holly hostage. Artemis will also try to hide the fact that he didn’t expect—or didn’t account for—the injury of his closest friend. For the moment, he maintains that the troll’s entrance changed nothing about the situation, demonstrating that he does not wish to appear caught off guard, which ultimately adds to Holly’s satisfaction after punching him when he is rendered near speechless.
